Magazine names Rapid City, Spearfish to ‘America's Best Adventure Towns' list

RAPID CITY, S.D. (9-30-09) – National Geographic Adventure magazine has included Rapid City and Spearfish to its list of “America's Best Adventure Towns.” The cities, in the Black Hills of South Dakota, are among the 100 adventure towns featured in the magazine’s October edition.

“These days, the glimmer of gold in the Black Hills may be the reflection off a mountain biker’s helmet. Rapid City boasts 300 miles of two-wheeling trails and a gnarly dirt-jump park,” National Geographic editors wrote about Rapid City. “Kitschy Rushmore attractions add flavor, but locals head to the community theater or classical music hall instead.”

The Rapid City story highlighted the Western Spirit Cycling Adventures’ five-day mountain bike trip, the Corn Exchange Restaurant and the Hisega Lodge along Rapid Creek. Last year, National Geographic Adventure named Rapid City one of 50 “Next Best Adventure Towns.”

“Spearfish is buffered by three mountain peaks and sits at the mouth of a 20-mile long canyon renowned for fly-fishing. The 1.2 million acre Black Hills National Forest lies just south of the city and is crisscrossed with 450 miles of hiking paths and hundreds of miles of primitive tracks for off-roading,” the editors wrote.

The Spearfish story also mentioned the Crow Peak Trail, the Bay Leaf Café and the Spearfish Canyon Lodge. Other cities on this year’s adventure list include Moab, Utah, Flagstaff, Ariz., and Boulder, Colo.

The Black Hills are gaining an international reputation for outdoor adventure sports such as mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking, backpacking, fishing and cross-country skiing. The recent Primal Quest Badlands endurance race highlighted the Black Hills’ rugged terrain and scenic beauty for a worldwide audience.
