Wild Bill Days Set to Kick-off in Deadwood

Free weekend of entertainment includes John Michael Montgomery, Ryan Shupe & The RubberBand, DockDogs, and Cowboy Fast Draw Championships

DEADWOOD, S.D. (6/11/2010) – Historic Deadwood will transform into an entertainment venue for all tastes as Wild Bill Days rolls into town, June 18-20. The summer kick-off celebration offers everything from free concerts to DockDogs and pole vaulting as the Black Hills town celebrates its most infamous resident, Wild Bill Hickok.

Wild Bill Days 2010 features free Main Street concerts by country superstar John Michael Montgomery and the fiddle-picking, banjo-plucking jamsters Ryan Shupe & The RubberBand. Weekend events also include a national DockDogs competition, the Cowboy Fast Draw Championships, the Firearms and Old West Auction & Show, Wild West re-enactors, a barbecue cook-off and a pole-vaulting exhibition on Main Street.

Wild Bill events begin at 11 a.m. Friday, June 18, with the annual March of Dimes and First Gold Celebrity Shoot Out fundraiser at Ferguson Field, across the street from the First Gold Hotel complex. This Fast Draw competition is open to everyone, from professional to beginner. The DockDogs competition – which involves high-flying, water-loving dogs – begins Friday morning too. Throughout Friday, the Firearms and Old West Auction preview and show will be held at The Lodge at Deadwood.

Free concerts on Friday night begin at 5 p.m. with Shantel Bolks. Brock Finn will follow and open up for Ryan Shupe and the RubberBand, who will take to the stage at 8 p.m. Their hits include the chart-topping “Dream Big,” as well as “Don’t Leave Me Lonely,” “All I need,” “My Life” and a retro ode to a staple of junk food – “Corn Dogs.”

Saturday will feature the Cowboy Fast Draw Championships at Ferguson Field beginning at 9 a.m. This event features literally the fastest and most accurate gun slingers on earth today. Deadwood’s restaurants will compete in a barbecue cook-off, and visitors are asked to help in the judging – by simply enjoying each chef’s barbecue creations. Also, pole vaulters from nearby Black Hills State University will put on an exhibition at noon on Main Street. The DockDogs competition and Firearms and Old West Auction and Show also continue on Saturday.

And to kick the celebration into high gear on Saturday night, country superstar John Michael Montgomery will play a free concert on Main Street. Montgomery has a host of hits, including his first, “Life’s a Dance,” that turned him overnight from an unknown act into a national star. His rich baritone voice is also behind songs such as “I Swear,” “I Love the Way You Love Me,” “Letters from Home,” “I Can Love You Like That,” “Be My Baby Tonight,” and “Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident)."

His latest album, “Time Flies,” is on shelves now. Music starts at 5 p.m. on Saturday with Shantel Bolks and Brock Finn. Montgomery takes the stage at 8 p.m.

On Sunday, the finals of the Cowboy Fast Draw Championships will take place at Ferguson Field, and the Firearms and Old West Auction will begin at The Lodge at 10 a.m.
